Re our class discussion today about how uncritical celebration of Euro-American “progress” and “progressiveness” on sex and gender can collude with, or function as an alibi for, political projects that contrast such seeming sexual tolerance to racial, religious, ethnic, or national groups whose supposed homophobia demonstrates their backwardness. See here for commentary on Butler’s decision–by Jasbir Puar, whose bookTerrorist Assemblages: Homonationalism in Queer Times, I mentioned today. And here’s the link to an April 2013 conference at CUNY on “Homonationalism and Pinkwashing,” with the talks available for streaming.
